چکیده

Proefschrii ter verkrijging van de graad van doctor aan de Technische Universiteit Dell, op gezag van de Rector Magniicus prof. Acknowledgements ere are a number of people that have played, in various ways, an important role in the realization of this thesis. First of all I would like to thank Suhas Diggavi and Christina Fragouli for a very pleasant and inspiring time at EPFL. eir guidance has been invaluable in my development as a researcher. I would also like to thank my promotor Sonia Heemstra de Groot for the important role she has played in enabling me to perform the research that has led to this thesis. In this respect, many thanks, as well, to John de Waal and Richard Boucherie. It has been a true pleasure to have had Jos Weber as my copromotor. Working together with Jos has been a wonderful experience. His keen eye, creativity and perseverance have been a true inspiration. I would like to thank him for his ongoing support throughout the process of writing this thesis. Part of the research that is represented in this thesis is the result of collaboration with Michael Gastpar. Working with Michael has been a very valuable and wonderful experience. Finally, I would like to thank all my friends and colleagues at EPFL, TU Dell, TI-WMC and the University of Twente. anks to them, writing this thesis has been a pleasure.

Broadcast Routing in Wireless Ad-Hoc Networks: A Particle Swarm optimization Approach

While routing in multi-hop packet radio networks (static Ad-hoc wireless networks), it is crucial to minimize power consumption since nodes are powered by batteries of limited capacity and it is expensive to recharge the device. This paper studies the problem of broadcast routing in radio networks. Given a network with an identified source node, any broadcast routing is considered as a directed...

Interactive Computation of Type-Threshold Functions in Collocated Broadcast-Superposition Networks

In wireless sensor networks, various applications involve learning one or multiple functions of the measurements observed by sensors, rather than the measurements themselves. This paper focuses on type-threshold functions, e.g., the maximum and indicator functions. Previous work studied this problem under the collocated collision network model and showed that under many probabilistic models for...

Compute-and-Forward on a Line Network with Random Access

Signal superposition and broadcast are important features of the wireless medium. Compute-and-Forward, also known as Physical Layer Network Coding (PLNC), is a technique exploiting these features in order to improve performance of wireless networks. More precisely, it allows wireless terminals to reliably decode a linear combination of all messages, when a superposition of the messages is recei...

Toward an energy efficient PKC-based key management system for wireless sensor networks

Due to wireless nature and hostile environment, providing of security is a critical and vital task in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). It is known that key management is an integral part of a secure network. Unfortunately, in most of the previous methods, security is compromised in favor of reducing energy consumption. Consequently, they lack perfect resilience and are not fit for applications ...

A survey on the wi-fi wireless network systems penetration approaches

Wireless network technology made it possible to communicate easily using the electromagnetic waves leading to removing the biggest barrier in portable communications. As these networks use the air as the communication medium which leads to face with more vulnerabilities. Wireless networks play a vital role in our life in a way that all devices ranging from local modems to organizational equipme...

Network Coding for Wireless Networks

The main idea in network coding was introduced in 2000 by Ahlswede et al. With network coding, an intermediate node can not only forward its incoming packets but also encode them. It has been shown that the use of network coding can enhance the performance of wired networks significantly. Recent works have indicated that network coding can also offer significant benefits for wireless networks. ...
